A pharmaceutical wholesale company has ordered a three-month suspension of its most recent wholesale supply of the popular erectile dysfunction medication sildenafil.

The firm, which makes the drug, had been supplying the medication without a prescription for more than six months.

“The recent sale of our wholesale supply of sildenafil has been a significant setback for the firm,” said James W. McLeod, vice president, global public affairs for the pharmaceutical company. “The sale of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, to wholesalers in the United States was a positive development for our industry.”

The recent sale of the medication has caused a number of wholesalers to cut prices and stop supplying the medication for more than six months.

“The decision by the company to stop supplying the drug is a major loss to our business,” said David D. Lue, an analyst for Citibank. “The decision by the company to suspend the wholesale supply of the drug is another setback for our business.”

The decision is one of several recent cases the company is trying to appeal. Last year, the FDA warned that sildenafil, a medication approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction, is not safe for use in children and adolescents. Sildenafil has a long half life, which is two years, and the medication should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is also not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in children and adolescents.

“Sildenafil was an essential medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men and is now available for sale without a prescription,” said John R. Fendler, president and CEO of the firm. “We believe that the suspension of the sale of sildenafil will help to ensure that the drug remains a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.”

The drug was originally developed as an over the counter treatment for erectile dysfunction. However, it has since been FDA approved for use in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, which is a condition that affects the flow of urine into the bladder.

In 2003, the FDA approved sildenafil for the treatment of BPH, also known as erectile dysfunction.

Today, the FDA has approved sildenafil for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction, but only for adult men with no prostate. The drug is not approved for use in women.

Currently, sildenafil is not used for treating BPH, but it is being used in a separate treatment for erectile dysfunction, called sildenafil citrate, and should be used only when prescribed by a doctor.

“The sale of sildenafil to wholesalers in the United States for the treatment of BPH has been a positive development for our industry,” said McLeod. “We believe that the suspension of the sale of this drug is a significant loss for our business, as it is currently the only drug in this category that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of BPH.

“The fact that the company has been making these drugs for so long and is not currently making a decision to sell them in the United States is a significant blow to our business,” said W. Robert Smith, president and CEO of the firm.

“The decision by the company to suspend the wholesale supply of this medication for two months is another setback for our business,” said McLeod. “The decision by the company to suspend the wholesale supply of the drug for two months is another setback for our business, as the drug has been the subject of several lawsuits in the past and has been the subject of numerous drug liability lawsuits.”

A public relations firm representing the pharmaceutical firm had earlier said that it was in a “black triangle” when it found that the company had “unjustly priced” the drug for sale in the United States for more than three months.

The company, however, had earlier said that it was “in a ‘black triangle’ of financial considerations and the potential impact of the drug” on its operations, which included its ability to reduce its volume and reduce its production costs.

The drug is manufactured under the same manufacturing and supply chains as Viagra, with a similar marketing and distribution model.
